Manufactured by Tata Motors of India, Tata Indica is a small hatchback vehicle. Besides being manufactured Tata Indica is also exported to Europe while retailing started in 2004 in South Africa. It was called City Rover in UK, when it was imported by MG Rover. It was on 30 December 1998, Tata Motors was introduced as the most modern car ever to be designed by an Indian company: the Indica. Earlier the name was TELCO. The marketing slogans used for the promotion of Tata Indica were like "The Big... Small Car" and "More car per car?. This ad campaign focused primarily on roomy interiors and affordability. Very soon the company received 1, 15, 000 bookings. In less than two years, the Indica emerged as the number one car in its segment.
Tata Indica was partly designed and developed by Tata Motors. It is a five-door compact hatchback with a 1.4 L petrol/diesel engine designated as 475DL internally. This is a mainly a homegrown engine which is derivative of the engine used by Tata in their line of pickups and SUVs earlier with a condensed stroke. The original engine was designated as 483DL which stood for 4 cylinder and 83 mm stroke.
The Indica offered air conditioning and electric windows options, which were previously restricted to only up market imported cars in India. About three years later the Tata Indica was exported to European markets for the very first time. From 2003 the Indica was re-badged in Britain as the CityRover. This vehicle ceased manufacture in April 2005 when MG Rover went bankrupt, and did not resume production when new owners Nanjing Automobile launched its own versions of the MG Rover range in 2007.
Opposing to accepted belief, the car was not designed exclusively in India. The outer body styling was actually done by an Italian design house called I.DE.A Institute, under contract from Tata Motors. The engine was however indigenous.
