Considered a model car, the Hindustan Ambassador is manufactured by Hindustan Motors of India. Since 1957, the car has been in production and is based on the model of Morris Oxford made by the Morris Motor Company at Cowley, Oxford in the United Kingdom. Despite its British origins, the Ambassador is considered the perfect Indian car. This car made by Hindustan Motors at its Uttarpara plant near Kolkata (Calcutta) and was once considered India's national car as it was supposed to be best suited to the harsh Indian topography. It is one of the preferred means of conveyance for the India's political leadership before they moved onto SUVs and luxury cars. Till 2002, the Ambassador was used to be the Prime Minister's vehicle before getting replaced with a BMW limo (which has continued since) in the later regime of Vajpayee.
Origins of Ambassador:
During the time when the Birlas wanted a new model to substitute their already old Hindustan models, they explored the possibilities of the then-new Morris Oxford Series III. Initially the car came with a side valve engine but was later improved to an overhead valve engine.
The innovations with a semi-monocoque chassis and a spacious interior made it class apart.
Evolution of Ambassador:
Affectionately acknowledged as the Amby, it has been in continuous production since its commencement, with very few changes to its frame here and there. The first recognizable model was called Land master, with a curvilinear boot and a somewhat slanting hood.
Engines of Ambassador:
The old petrol engine was replaced in favor of an Isuzu 1.8 liter engine in the early 1990s and became the fastest production car in India, beating Fiats, the Maruti Udyog, and other Tata cars that came at that time. The engines at present available are a 75 bhp petrol engine and an 80 bhp (59.8 kW) Isuzu turbocharged and intercooler diesel engine.
